Historically some organized infidel groups in Europe and possibly in some other places were trying to manipulate language. Usually by introducing new words and using them simultaneously like it was already an existing word. Sometimes maybe leveraging artificially created trends or events. Because the act of spreading new words was done by engaging in chats with people later this activity referred as Jihad.
This may be to likely to be true to be classified as folk etymology. But folk etymology is the real etymology not the one fabricated by Western academy.
