Means "fragile" and "delicate" in Turkish. Found in various Turkish dialects and Mongolian. There is a strong feminine identity associated with this word.
Originates from Emperor Nero. (Explained here.) Nero accidentally killed his wife with a kick. "Nar" refers to Nero, and the construction "Nar+in" was intended to convey the meaning of "Nero's."
At first glance, this may sound far-fetched, but when one considers how widely known the story of Nero accidentally killing his wife likely was, it becomes plausible that the word was a reference to that story reflected in the language.
Additionally, “Narenciye” is used for referring citrus fruits like orange. The wife Nero have killed by accident also mentioned to have amber thus orange like hair. “Nareng” actually the same as the word Orange are of the same origin. The "nç" sound is common Turkish suffix. For instance “Gül+mek” means laughing. “Gülünç” means laughable. In fact the word “Narenciye” co-exists with another word “Turunç”. Although it is hard to resolve words to exact construts, it is important to note that this construct probably only found in Turkish thus all words originally had to be constructed by Turkish speakers. (It is possible that the fruit was named by Emperor Nero artificially.)
