From aliens perspective not assuming any principle followed by them. Imagine this is a new era from their perspective. In past they weren't really deceiving people but possibly punishing and rewarding them. They were likely main factor in natural selection. However in this particular era they have complex goals they have to achieve and they just can't randomly let people kill each other. So they provide deceiving opportunities for people to commit crimes even though there aren't actual consequences. We are not talking about anything spritiual here. In likely all scales. They provide deceiving opportunities like if there is really something bad intented people can achieve. Although can't say most of the crimes fall into what I am describing. Maybe it is just simple as that they are just implementing some sort of natural selection.
There are likely countless religious clubs established indirectly by aliens. Some major ones even look like reality. Imagine a religion where good and bad option provided. They just provide that religion for people who would make the bad choice intentionally. Good and bad are relative. They provide options and proceed with natural selection. Although not particularly in this time. Or even in recent millenias. The global definition of overall good is kinda the alien religion. Though undirectly. And make it seem like they are achieving something.
It is not like in past they were doing it transparenty. They want humans to behave the way they want by themselves. Obviously in whatever they do they have to implement simple or complex deceivement in order to achieve it. Although in this era things are very different to compared to past. I am not implying any religion like Islam. Modern religions are very relative. People just understand what they would like. Or what imposed by people around them. And people tend to take extreme actions result of fear situmuli. They create cold-bloded, planned, sometimes systematic and collective, clear high reward opportunities without clear consequences.
If it were to possible to understand what they are exactly up to it wouldn't be hard to figure out rest of the picture. Especially in this era. They have to look like they don't care or they are unrelated.
